Area tennis players wrap seasons at state
MINNEAPOLIS - All seven area boys tennis players were eliminated during the first day of the Minnesota State Tennis Tournaments individual competition on Thursday at the Reed-Sweatt Family Tennis Center and the Baseline Tennis Center.
In Class A, New London-Spicer's Josh Proehl and Litchfield singles player Trevor Meyer and the Dragons' doubles team of Matthew Wedin and Jordan Green all won first-round matches but were eliminated after second-round losses.
Meyer defeated East Grand Forks' Benjamin Kern 6-2, 1-6, 6-1 in the first round but was eliminated by Duluth Denfeld's David Bush 6-1, 6-2 in the second round.
Proehl defeated Worthington's Blaine Doeden 6-4, 6-4 in the first round but ran into No. 1 seed Parker Law of Mounds Park Academy in the second round and lost 6-1, 6-1.
Minnewaska's Carter LaMont lost to Law 6-0, 6-0 in the first round, then fell to Doeden 6-3, 6-3 in the consolation bracket.
In Class A doubles, Litchfield's Wedin and Green won 6-2, 1-6, 6-1 over Rochester Lourdes' Thomas Eckel and Jonathan Onigkeit. Wedin and Green lost to Virginia's Jake Seitz and Ethan Youso 6-4 6-4 in the second round.
In Class AA, the Willmar duo of Hunter Fischer and Peyton Fischer lost their opening-round match to Benilde-St. Margaret's Tristan Fjelstad and Ryan Frost 6-0, 6-3. The Fischers then lost to Minnetonka's Trevor Smiley and Jacob Stork 6-0, 6-2 in the consolation bracket.
