Willmar VFW run comes to end at state

BRAINERD - A five-run sixth inning gave Willmar a one-run lead late in Friday's state VFW baseball playoff elimination game.

But, Winona was able to respond with a seven-run top of the seventh en route to a 13-8 victory to end Post 1639's season.

Willmar managed to mount comebacks twice on Friday. Down 2-0 after the top of the first, Ashton Gregory hit a fly ball to left field to score Tanner Bauman. Gregory tied the game after scoring on an Andrew Baumgart ground out.

Trailing 6-2 in the bottom of the sixth, Willmar's second rally started with RBI singles by Dylan Arndorfer and Chase Dirksen. Then with two outs, Asaiah Smith cleared the bases with a single that put Post 1639 ahead 7-6.

The lead was short-lived after an RBI triple from Jack Herczeg made it a 7-7 game in the top of the seventh. Winona took the lead for good after Herczeg scored on a wild pitch and Ethan Anderson cracked a two-run double.

Jett Salonek got the start for Willmar, striking out three over 4-2/3 innings while giving up five runs (two earned) on four hits and two walks. Gregory was hit with the loss after allowing eight runs on six hits and two runs in 1-1/3 innings.
