Two dead in wrong-way crash near St. Cloud
WAITE PARK, Minn. — Two people are dead after a man driving the wrong way on Division Street crashed into their vehicle at about 7:15 p.m. Monday, July 9, according to Waite Park Police Chief Dave Bentrud.
A preliminary investigation determined Charlie Barnett, 28, of St. Cloud was driving westbound in the eastbound lane of Division Street when he hit a vehicle driving eastbound head-on near Fourth Avenue South, just east of St. Cloud.
The driver of the vehicle traveling east, Richard Tomlinson, 61, of Grantsburg, Wis., was declared dead at the scene. Roger Nelson, 77, of Clearwater was the passenger in the vehicle. He was transported to St. Cloud Hospital where he later died from his injuries.
According to a news release from Bentrud, Tomlinson was in town to test drive the 1970 Chevrolet El Camino for potential purchase from Nelson when they were hit.
Barnett was transported to St. Cloud Hospital with injuries that were not considered life-threatening. He faces pending charges of criminal vehicular operation of a motor vehicle, reckless driving and an order for protection violation, according to the release. It also states more charges are possible.
